The amount of openly accessible information about the events and actors that have shaped human history has never been greater than today, be it in the form of books, articles, documentaries or podcasts. At the same time, access to this wealth of resources often remains cumbersome and fragmented, and understanding the broader context of specific events and actors typically requires an amount of time and effort that limits the audience to a fraction of what it could be. We intend to change this: our interactive map captures the time and space dimensions of history in an intuitive, visual way and shows events and actors in their geographic and temporal context. While using concise textual summaries as the immediate entry points for users’ exploratory journey, we don’t limit the resources we put on display to articles, but complement them with a rich library of podcasts and documentaries.
Our core value proposition is focussed on facilitating access to existing resources, displaying and combining them in ways that offer unique insights. We are committed to ensuring full transparency about, and proper attribution to, the creators and owners of the relevant content. We want users to see time-travel.app as their portal to historical information and encourage them to dig as deep as they are inclined to from here onwards. This may range from casual look up of key facts from a biography to deep dives into the evolution of a an empire’s borders, tracing it down to the primary sources that document it.
The dataset behind our visual interface is based on careful curation, processing and contrasting of information from a multitude of sources, including, but not limited to, the most relevant encyclopedias and mapping projects in existence. We deliberately make prominent use of Wikipedia for the entry layer of text we display as we deem it particularly suitable as a common denominator across sources: it offers both unmatched breadth of coverage and a reasonable degree of standardisation with regard to text style and format.
